The Chicago Theater was a dominant theater enterprise for 20 years from 1925 to 1945. You don’t have to watch anything in the theater as simply seeing its famous marquee, seen in many films, television shows, artworks and photography, is breathtaking enough.
Visit the Buckingham Fountain, one of the starting points for The Amazing Race. It is especially wondrous at night with its stunning display of light and water works. One of the largest water fountains in the world, it is may remind you of a wedding cake and was originally inspired by the Palace of Versailles’ Latona Fountain.
Architecturally beautiful, one may mistake the Carrie Eliza Getty Tomb as the entrance to a commercial building. The tomb is constructed of limestone, on a triangular plot of land, by Louis Sullivan in 1890.
Fans of architectural genius, Frank Lloyd Wright, may be delighted to visit The Robie House. It is one of the architect’s best known examples, and also one of the last to be built, in his Prairie style.
When you get to the Tribune Tower, remember to look all the way upwards towards the sky to fully appreciate its Gothic architecture. Home to the Chicago Tribune and CNN’s Chicago office, it features fragments from other buildings from around the world in its lower levels. Some of them are from the Taj Mahal, the Parthenon, the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall and even Angkor Wat. These fragments are labeled with their location of origin.
